Miss Spellings
Every once in a while it happens. Not in our congregation, of course, but in thousands of congregations across the United States. Words are misspelled. Do you want to know my pet peeves? They’re there, their and they’re.
Now sometimes misspelled words can have consequences of epic proportions. I still remember Vice President Dan Quayle judging a spelling bee. He told a contestant that the correct spelling of potato was P-O-T-A-T-O-E. Considering the plural of potato is potatoes, it was an honest mistake. But he was never able to shrug off the damage.
Fortunately, most of the time misspelled words are just plain funny, like these:
“The Outreach Committee has enlisted 25 visitors to make calls on people who are not afflicted with any church “
“Evening Massage - 6 PM”
“The pastor would appreciate if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday morning.”
“Thursday night – potluck supper. Prayer and medication to follow.”
“The rosebud on the altar this morning is to announce the birth of David Alan Belzer, the sin of Rev. and Mrs. Julius Belzer.”
Sometimes misspelled words cause someone to lose their job. Apparently the Director of the Chili mint, Gregorio Iniguez, has been fired for misspelling the name of their country on the 50 peso coin. The country was misspelled as “Chilie”. Strangely enough, even though it is a huge mistake and embarrassment, collectors are buying up the coins as collector’s items.
That’s the way it is with us and God. As humans we are minted with imperfections in our lives. And yet, God loves us as if we were the most precious thing in the world. Even though we are stamped with sin, we are of infinite value to God. So much that He sent Jesus to gather us up.
Blessings,
Pastor David Hook
