Devotion for 10 July

A brief prayer is offered that you can add to your daily prayers this week. The scripture is from our Sunday Service Bulletin for today.  We are continuing a summer sermon series on Psalms.
OT READING: Psalm 139:1-6; 23-24 (English Standard Version)
Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
Devotion: He is always There for Us
In our sermon today we talked about the comfort of God knowing all about us and being there for us. A comment was made with respect to verse 4 about God knowing before a word gets on our tongue. Rhetorically, is there a way we could use this fact to figure a way to stop saying things we should not. This would be a very helpful thing especially for the political class that we are seeing more and more of now that they want our votes.  Not a day goes by that someone who is being media interviewed lets go of an inappropriate remark that causes a never ending chatter cycle. I am sure that folks running for elective office would like a way to hold back these kinds of comments. I can think of a few things I have said in my life that should not have been said, maybe you do too. We cannot change the past -- but we can ask for help. At the end of our text today, the Psalmist [likely David] concludes with a prayer that God would search him to make sure he was not like his enemies. This is a great model for us. Knowing that God knows us intimately and is ready to help us can bring great peace into the lives of believers.

We pray: Lord you know me well, thank you for being there for me. Amen
