A brief prayer is offered that you can add to your daily prayers. The scripture is from our 16 August Sunday Service Bulletin. We are continuing on a multi-part series on Job. Some of the devotion thoughts were inspired and quoted using the footnotes in the LSB (pp836).

Old Testament Reading:  Job 42
Then Job answered the Lord and said: 2“I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. 3’who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. 4’Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you make it known to me.’ 5I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; 6therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

I lay my hand on my mouth. 5 I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.” 6 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: 7 “Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. 8 Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be in the right? 9 Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his? 15 “Behold, Behemoth,  which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox 16 Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly. 17 He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together. 18 His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron 19 “He is the first of the works of God; let him who made him bring near his sword! 41 “Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook or press down his tongue with a cord? 2 Can you put a rope in his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook 3 Will he make many pleas to you? Will he speak to you soft words?

32 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. 2 Then Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, burned with anger. He burned with anger at Job because he justified himself rather than God. 3 He burned with anger also at Job's three friends because they had found no answer, although they had declared Job to be in the wrong.4 Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were older than he. 5 And when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, he burned with anger.

Job Part 6 - Devotion and Sermon Questions

A brief prayer is offered that you can add to your daily prayers. The scripture is from our Sunday Service Bulletin.

Old Testament Reading:  Job 20:1-7, 21:1-16
(English Standard Version)

Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said: 2“Therefore my thoughts answer me, because of my haste within me. 3I hear censure that insults me, and out of my understanding a spirit answers me. 4 Do you not know this from of old, since man was placed on earth, 5that the exulting of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment? 6Though his height mount up to the heavens, and his head reach to the clouds, 7he will perish forever like his own dung; those who have seen him will say ‘Where is he?’ Then Job answered and said: 2“Keep listening to my words, and let this be your comfort. 3Bear with me, and I will speak, and after I have spoken, mock on. 4As for me, is my complaint against man? Why should I not be impatient? 5Look at me and be appalled, and lay your hand over your mouth. 6When I remember, I am dismayed, and shuddering seizes my flesh. 7 Why do the wicked live, reach old age, and grow mighty in power?

Job part 5 - Devotion

A brief prayer is offered at the end that you may add to your daily prayers. The scripture reference is from this Sunday's Service Bulletin.

Old Testament Reading: Job 19 (ESV)

25 “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. 26 And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, 27 whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another.  My heart faints within me!”

Devotion: My Redeemer Lives!
According to Miriam Webster, a redeemer is a person who brings goodness, honor, etc. to something once again. Our Lord Jesus Christ brings us goodness and honor that we do not deserve. But this goodness that we can now claim was bought with a heavy price. Our Lord suffered greatly and felt the wrath of God for the sins of the world. While on the cross Jesus spoke these words, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Matthew 27:46b (Also see Psalm 22:1). Jesus suffered physically, but he also felt spiritual pain at the separation from his Father in heaven. When we suffer, let us remember our Lord's suffering. We are not forsaken because our Lord is always with us. We have hope because our Redeemer, Jesus Christ, brings us life and frees us from the burdens of sin. Job's body may have been devastated, but Job's great faith led him to declare, “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.”

Prayer: O Lord, let us never forget that Christ is our Redeemer who loves us so much that he gave his life for us. Praise be to God, our great Redeemer.

May God bless you and keep you,

Cheryl Virden

Old Testament Reading: Job 8 [ESV]
Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said: 2“How long will you say these things, and the words of your mouth be a great wind? 3Does God pervert justice? Or does the Almighty pervert the right? 4If your children have sinned against him, he has delivered them into the hand of their transgression. 5If you will seek God and plead with the Almighty for mercy, 6if you are pure and upright, surely then He will rouse Himself for youand restore your rightful habitation.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 26: 20-24, [ESV]

20 When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve. 21 And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.

Gospel Reading [ESV]

Matthew 14: 13-21
17They said to Him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” 18And He said, “Bring them here to me.” 19Then He ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 21And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
